Understanding Melasma
Melasma presents as symmetric brown patches, often on cheeks, forehead, and upper lip. Hormones, UV, and heat trigger it. Cure is unrealistic — management is the goal.
Aggressive laser can worsen melasma. Fitzpatrick-aware settings, priming agents, and lifelong SPF are essential.
Lumecca Role
Lumecca IPL targets red and brown chromophores — sun spots respond well; melasma requires cautious parameters and often combination with topical hydroquinone alternatives or tranexamic acid protocols.
Multiple low-intensity sessions beat one aggressive blast. We test spots and document photography each visit.
Maintenance
Daily SPF, hat use, and avoiding overheating (saunas, hot yoga) reduce flare frequency. Pregnancy-related melasma may fade postpartum — treat conservatively while nursing per OB guidance.
